How is selenite formed?

Selenite is a mineral is a form of gypsum and is composed of calcium and boron. Selenite forms crystals that vary in shape and size which you can see in the images contained in this article.

Selenite forms from the evaporation of sulfate-rich solutions like salty lakes and hot springs. It can be found with other minerals like calcite within limestone caves and caverns.  These sedimentary selenite deposits are often found embedded within the limestone.

Selenite crystals can also be found in igneous rocks. This molten-rock embedded with selenite will fluoresce under ultraviolet light.

Stalagmites and stalactites.

Selenite crystal is most often found in caves in the form of both stalagmites and stalactites. If you've ever toured a cave with stalagmites and stalactites, you might have heard the phrase:

"the mites crawl up and in the tites fall down.”

This moniker helps people visualize the difference between stalactites and stalagmites.

This cave has the largest selenite crystals ever found in the world. Selenite crystal caves are renowned for their majesty and beauty and are often the sites of religious and spiritual ceremonies.

Selenite crystals are often clear or white in color and can be of substantial size. The crystals are sometimes parallel to one another as in the form of a selenite wand, but they can also be tessellate making a more mosaic pattern formation as in the image below.

Gypsum flowers are another form of selenite which are found within salt lake deposits such as the Great Salt Lake in Utah, USA. Here, the selenite forms crystals clusters that resemble flowers. They are usually clear and colorless, but they can also be white or pink. Another floral formation of selenite is desert rose selenite.

Where is selenite found?

The clear variety of selenite is found in sedimentary deposits all over the world. The main areas for collecting are the USA, Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Slovenia.

Selenite is found in Australia, and Greece and Morocco as well. Morocco has many rich deposits of selenite stone, and many people consider this Moroccan selenite to have the highest durability and quality.  

The Mexican state of Coahuila produces the most selenite crystals in the world. One of the largest deposits of selenite in the world is found in a cave nearly 1,000 feet under a mountain in Chihuahua, Mexico. We will discuss more about that below.

Appearance - what does selenite look like?

Selenite has a color that ranges from clear to white and can be found in many different locations on Earth.

Selenite most often has transparent and crystalline appearance is considered to be colorless. However, selenite does come in a number of colors depending on the minerals it contains. Other colors for selenite crystal are white, gray, yellow, green and peach selenite which resembles candy and is often used to make lamps.

Properties

Selenite belongs to a family of minerals known as the Gypsum Group, which includes a number of other minerals like Alabaster.

The crystal structure of selenite is monoclinic with a hardness is 4-4.5. Selenite cleaves easily in three directions forming pyramids and octahedrons.

Selenite crystal formations vary from cubic crystals with octahedral faces and sometimes may be striated.  Hexagonal plates and flower clusters as found in Great Salt Lake, UT.

Selenite is softer than gypsum has been used to create vases and chandeliers that are hardened by firing in a kiln at low temperatures.

Selenite History

The name for selenite comes from the Greek word “selene” which means moon.  Selene, the moon goddess, loves to wear a crown of the crescent moon on her head.

It is said that selenite was first discovered in 1797 by William Hyde Wollastonby. He was part of a group of miners looking for gypsum. Since its discovery, selenite has been used for a number of purposes.

Historically, large, thin sheets of selenite have been used to make things like window panes and eye glasses.  It is also commonly used as jewelry and for decoration. Desert rose selenite, for example, is very striking and fitting for a display case.

Biggest selenite discovery in history.

La Cueva de los Cristales in Mexico contains the largest selenite crystal columns ever seen in the world. This powerful healing crystal deposit is located 984 feet beneath a mountain in Chihuahua, Mexico.  The selenite crystal cave is about 250 feet long and was found to be filled with selenite rock from floor to ceiling.

The selenite stone in this cave reached lengths of up to 36 feet, which made it officially the largest selenite crystal formation ever recorded. It is estimated to have taken at least 500,000 years for these crystals to have grown to this size.

The giant crystal cave was likely full of water, and this water was heated thanks to magma beneath the cave. The water temperature remained consistent at a few degrees above 136°F, which is necessary for selenite crystals to grow.

If the sheetrock in the walls of houses is made from gypsum and gypsum is an ingredient of selenite, then does that mean there could be selenite in the walls? Are we getting protected and natural health benefits from the gypsum in the walls?
